The Mangroves (Ecosystem)
Our restaurant is located inside a preserved national park/ protected area called, Marine Mammal Sanctuary of Estero Hondo. The park offers beaches, and areas that turn into a bay, which is the natural habitat of 40 grouped manatees. Although it may seem like a small number, it is known as the largest population of this species that exists on the island and possibly throughout the Caribbean.
Mangroves produce oxygen and reduce the amount of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere. Important for providing protection from storms and hurricanes, food habitat substrate nurseries, and breeding ground for numerous endangered and commercially important organisms and species, they also reduce sedimentation and filter nutrients and toxins naturally for good water quality to coral reefs and the sea grass ecosystem.
